Design challenges for next generation optical networks
Online Course organised by Politecnico di Torino and Infinera Portugal for ETN WON and REAL-NET
5-6 July 2021 remotely online.
This two-day short course will overview the remarkable evolution over the last three decades of optical networking, from an infrastructure of 2.5G/10G point-to-point links to large scale mesh deployments with reconfigurable lightpaths at 400G and beyond. It will then discuss optical transmission and the fundamental need for its proper abstraction for optimized network planning. The increasingly relevant role of SDN in transport networks will be explained and the main capacity planning problems that underpin each new major roll-out of new or additional capacity will be highlighted. Finally, the course will provide insight into the perspectives of an autonomous optical transport with advanced monitoring of in-field characteristics combined with self-optimization capabilities.
